Monologue #12: You got me livin’ only for the night…

Now the EP is out, I’ve had a bit more time for DJing and mixing – my latest offering is up now on the Marcel Wave Mixcloud. Slave to the Synths is a blend of italo, electro and romo spanning the decades. It seems to be my most popular mix so far, although quite a few of the tracks are fairly obscure. It’s nice to think of people being exposed to (and hopefully enjoying) the music of a band like Nancy Boy, who never had the fame they deserved in the lad rock-obsessed 90s. Or Raf’s italo version of Self Control, which predated Laura Branigan’s more famous rendition. A special one-off Der Hammer is taking place for the North England portion of my fellow DJ JJD’s tour of the UK and Europe as Soft Riot, along with Uncanny Valley and Hausfrau. This time the venue is Golden Harvest, a café in Sheffield’s Brutalist centre which also acts as a nightspot. The date is Saturday 7 November. More details here. Sadly I can’t promise a décor of neon Disney characters but there should at least be a smoke machine....

Monologue #11: ‘Exotic Prints’ EP out now

‘Exotic Prints’, a digital 4-track EP by Marcel Wave, is now available to buy on Bandcamp, offering a chance for all those who have enjoyed the music so far to support me in the lifestyle to which I have become accustomed – and maybe even witness the splendour of a full-length album in the future. To commemorate this momentous occasion, a video for one of the tracks has been created in partnership with JJD Works: watch Echtes Leder...

Monologue #10: Edging into autumn – Infest and upcoming EP

I’m DJing Bradford’s notable goth festival Infest this weekend, on Saturday night (set starting around midnight), along with Soft Riot as part of the Der Hammer DJ team. We’ll bring our trademark mix of synth-pop, electro and italo. I’m also pleased to announce that the mixing work with James Aparicio on my upcoming digital EP is nearing completion, with a release scheduled for autumn.  A Terrible Splendour fans may remember him as the producer of our album Poseurs. A touch of exotic synthesized emotion as the leaves begin to turn…    ...

Monologue #9: Summer in Berlin…and Bradford!

Der Hammer DJs are coming to Germany! Come and see us (me as Lady Boy, and Soft Riot) on Friday the 5th of June at the dark synth night Labyrinth at Berlin’s 1820 Club. Although we have no more Der Hammer nights planned for Sheffield, we have been invited to DJ at the ever-popular gothic festival Infest in August this year, in Bradford UK. Head on over to the Infest website for more details and to book your tickets for the 3-day...

Monologue #8 – Der Hammer’s last stand…

…in Sheffield anyway! A final live synth event on 29th of May, featuring Berlin synth-punk Ben Bloodygrave and local duo Promenade Cinéma, as well as the ineffable Soft Riot. DJing from Marcel Wave aka Lady Boy.  This time the venue is the Red House. Not to worry though as we shall be purveying our synthetic sounds at other locations in the UK and abroad over the coming months. More info to follow...

Monologue #7: Bassoon dreams, sci-fi themes

Fans of Canadian synth purveyor Soft Riot will be thrilled to learn of Marcel Wave’s appearance as a bassoonist on his new limited edition CD “You Never Know What Might Come Next“. I can be heard in the middle 8 on the urban dystopia-inspired track ‘Mass Exodus’. I haven’t been playing bassoon very long – I started it in January 2013, hiring a Czech instrument  from Howarth’s in London. The bassoon has been described as one of the most difficult instruments in the orchestra and its sound has been likened to a sea god singing. It’s the only instrument that cannot be synthesized according to Synthesizer Patel, so it seemed an obvious choice for me. I was taken with it instantly and was lucky to find a good teacher to get started in London. After relocating to Sheffield I replaced it with a fine German Schreiber bassoon from Windstruments, a woodwind and brass emporium nestling in the West Yorkshire countryside. It’s the only shop in Crossflatts apart from a curry house and Tesco’s. It has a whole separate building full of bassoons… I also play bassoon on the Marcel Wave tracks Lady in Pieces and Les Nuits Sans Kim Wilde, which can be heard on Soundcloud....
